

SICOM has been in existence for many years and in the past was the primary South Australian Government spatial committee that coordinated activities between agencies. It originally reported to a Chief Executive level committee called the South Australian Spatial Information Council (SASIC). There have been no meetings of SASIC since 1999 however SICOM has continued with a modified role since the cessation of SASIC.
Membership of SICOM was expanded in 2000 to include the ABS, and subsequently a number of other non-SA Government groups. As a result the primary focus of SICOM has shifted to an information-sharing forum for SA Government, Commonwealth Government, Local Government, spatial industry and tertiary education representatives.
SICOM also provides linkages with ANZLIC – the Spatial Information Council and PSMA Australia.
The chair of SICOM is currently the South Australian representative on ANZLIC and this facilitates information transfer. Via this mechanism, ANZLIC activities are also easily promoted across a wide section of the spatial industry within South Australia.
The current SICOM chair is also a Director of PSMA Australia, providing a direct linkage between the initiatives and activities of SICOM and PSMA Australia.
